CO₂ Laser Resurfacing

CO₂ laser treatment can help with:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles (including around the eyes and mouth)
  • Loose or sagging eyelid skin
  • Uneven pigmentation and sun damage
  • Acne scars and other superficial scars
  • Rough skin texture
  • Overall skin rejuvenation

Results are gradual, with improvements continuing for several months as new collagen forms.

  • A numbing cream or local anaesthetic injections are used to reduce discomfort
  • The laser is carefully passed over the treatment area
  • The beam creates tiny controlled columns of heat, removing old skin and stimulating new collagen growth
  • The procedure usually takes 20–45 minutes, depending on the area treated

You may feel heat or tingling during treatment. A numbing cream is often used for comfort. After treatment, your skin may feel like sunburn for a few days.

  • Redness, swelling and a “sunburned” feeling are normal for the first few days
  • The skin will flake and peel as it heals (usually within 7–10 days)
  • Pinkness may persist for several weeks but can be covered with makeup after 7–10 days
  • For eyelid treatments, swelling can last slightly longer (up to 2 weeks)
  • You can usually return to work and social activities in 1–2 weeks

Results are long-lasting but not permanent. Ageing and sun exposure will continue to affect the skin. Most patients enjoy visible improvement for several years after treatment.

CO₂ laser resurfacing is best for people with:

  • Fine lines, wrinkles or loose skin on the eyelids or face
  • Sun-damaged or uneven skin tone
  • Acne scars or superficial scars
  • Have active infection (such as cold sores or skin infection)
  • Have recently had isotretinoin treatment
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a history of keloid scarring or very dark skin prone to pigmentation changes

Although CO₂ laser is safe and well-established, risks may include:

  • Redness and swelling (common, temporary)
  • Infection (rare, can be treated with medication)
  • Pigment changes (skin can become lighter or darker)
  • Scarring (very rare, more likely in people prone to keloids)
  • Prolonged redness lasting several weeks
  • Flare-up of cold sores (prevented with antiviral medication if needed)

To ensure the best healing and results:

  • Keep the treated area clean and well moisturised with healing ointment (such as Aquaphor or Vaseline)
  • Avoid picking or scratching the peeling skin
  • Sleep with your head elevated for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling
  • Use cold compresses for comfort in the first few days
  • Avoid heavy exercise, swimming and saunas for 2 weeks
  • Do not use makeup until the skin has fully healed (usually 7–10 days)
  • Strictly protect your skin from the sun with SPF 30+ and sunglasses for several months
  • Avoid smoking, as it delays healing and affects results

Please get in touch if you notice:

  • Increasing redness, swelling or discharge
  • Severe pain not relieved with medication
  • New blisters or spreading rash
